Seoul, Korea, October 22, 2012—SK Planet announced today that it will showcase its technological capabilities and business knowhow acquired as a leading provider of NFC-enabled mobile payment services in Korea, at the GSMA NFC and Mobile Money Summit 2012, which will be held October 22-25, in Milan, Italy.
For the second consecutive year, SK Planet has been invited by GSMA to speak on the progress of its mobile money business and strategy for the facilitation of NFC-based mobile payment. The company said that the invitation represents the global industry’s recognition of SK Planet’s efforts and achievements as a leading NFC service provider in Korea.
Since its inception in 2008, the GSMA Mobile Money Summit has been the premier event for industry leaders in the mobile and financial sectors to discuss latest innovations, key strategies, as well as the future of the mobile money and NFC industry through conference programs and exhibition showcases.
Kim Hoo-jong, SVP and Head of SK Planet’s Global Technology Research Institute will deliver keynote presentation on precondition for the facilitation of NFC services as well as the future of NFC on October 23 (local time). Kim will introduce success stories of SK Planet’s mobile wallet service ‘Smart Wallet’ favored by over 6 million subscribers and underscore the importance of identifying NFC convergence service models—e.g. membership and coupon—with diverse partners. In fact, NFC convergence services aimed at improving customer convenience, along with e-payment are key factors in driving the uptake of NFC.
Moreover, Kim will outline the progress of NFC Biz Partner Group, a consultative group that SK Planet formed with outside technology partners and introduce SmartTouch, an open NFC platform scheduled to be commercialized this year. His presentation will also include the role of SK Planet as an NFC-based platform business leader and the company’s future plan to expand the deployment of NFC infrastructure.
SK Planet has also been spearheading the efforts to establish international standards for NFC. Last June, the company has been chosen to head the NFC Global Interest Group commissioned by GSMA to set an agreed international standard for mobile payment with mobile networking operators in Europe, Korea, China, and US.
In addition, SK Planet is also actively involved in the NFC Fast Track Project aimed at the standardization and commercialization of SIM-based NFC with KT and Europe’s five major wireless operators that are implementing a large scale NFC project in Europe. Moreover, to prepare for the roll-out of Korea-China-Japan NFC services, the three countries are accelerating cooperation to establish common standards by the end of this year.
“As rapid growth and adoption of NFC is expected, thanks to the worldwide deployment of NFC infrastructure and devices, service providers around the world are taking a great interest in SK Planet’s leading NFC technologies and business know-how,” said Kim Hoo-jong, SVP and Head of SK Planet’s Global Technology Research Institute. “SK Planet will continue to lead the standardization of NFC and expand cooperation with partnering companies, as part of our efforts to build a strong global NFC ecosystem.”
Meanwhile, SK Planet has also been driving the adoption of NFC technologies in Korea, as demonstrated by the launch of one-stop NFC service named NFC & Joy last year at Incheon Munhak Baseball Stadium, home to SK Wyverns; commercial launch of mobile wallet service with Samsung Card and Shinsegae; NFC-based mobile membership issuance service; NFC pilot project in Myeong-dong area; and demonstration of NFC-based services at Yeosu Expo.
