- Appointed to head Mobile NFC Global Working Team (GWT) organized by GSMA - Will contribute its extensive experience and know-how to efforts in establishing international standards for NFC
Seoul, Korea, June 19, 2012 — SK Planet today announced that it will lead Global Working Team (GWT), an organization commissioned by Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) to establish international standards for near field communication (NFC).
SK Planet has been chosen to head GWT during its kick-off meeting held today to coincide with the opening of the 2012 Mobile Asia Expo which took place in Shanghai.
GWT, an entity organized by GSMA to set international NFC standards, is the successor of Pay Buy Mobile (PBM) project team which worked on mobile payment.
SK Planet will bring to the team its extensive knowledge and know-how accumulated as a pioneer of Korea’s NFC industry. GSMA said that SK Planet’s noteworthy accomplishments with regards to NFC technology made it a fitting candidate to lead the project.
The GWT will meet face-to-face on a quarterly basis in GSMA’s key events, while constantly discussing plans in conference calls and emails to set an agreed international standard. Member firms include SK Planet, KT, Europe’s top 5 mobile network operators (Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, and Vodafone), and major operators in Japan, China, and US.
Kim Jong-ho (manager of Standardization Team of SK Planet’s Global Tech. Research Institute) who has experiences in similar internal projects involving mobile wallet and payment since 2008 has been chosen as the project leader. Kim will chair GWT’s quarterly meetings, be involved in decision-making for work streams, and represent the team when holding meetings with external organizations.
SK Planet also announced plans to demonstrate NFC & JOY, an NFC-based service deployed at baseball parks to enhance customer convenience, in collaboration with Japanese mobile operator KDDI at a booth in 2012 MAE, with plans for commercialization in Japan. The service was deployed last year at Incheon Munhak Stadium, home to the SK Wyverns.
Prior to the full-fledged commercialization of its open platform tentatively dubbed Smart Touch in July, SK Planet formed an alliance with a group of Korea’s top NFC technology firms under the name of ‘NFC Biz Partner Group,’ as part of its efforts to expand NFC infrastructure and strengthen cooperation with external partners as well as developers. SK Planet has been at the forefront of facilitating the adoption of NFC technologies, as demonstrated by its commercial launch of NFC-enabled mobile payment services with Samsung Card and Shinsegae last month, NFC-based mobile membership issuance service, NFC pilot project in Myeong-dong area, and demonstration of NFC-based services at Yeosu Expo.
