Seoul, Korea, May 30, 2012 — SK Planet today announced its recruitment of the second Open API (Application Program Interface) Support Group that will utilize the company’s trademark service platforms such as T Map and T Store to develop innovative and popular services. The group will carry out 28 app development projects, while enjoying access to diverse support programs.
Select developers who submitted winning proposals include Daerisoft and five other development firms as well as 19 individual developers. By leveraging open APIs that allow the ability to interact with SK Planet’s core services such as T Map, T Store, and Game Center, developers will implement 28 development projects, namely, Game Talk that links users to game information and T Store, and Point Monster which offers users virtual rewards in exchange for participating in advertisement. The services are set to be completed in August and will make their first public appearance at T Store.
Open API Support Group, supported by Open Innovation Center is a community of individual app developers and small-sized development firms that utilize open APIs published by SK Planet to develop apps. Select projects will have access to development infrastructure such as development space, handset for testing purposes, and technical consulting from API Center. Developers will be part of SK Planet’s developer incentive program to earn a maximum of KRW 2 million when services are published and receive performance-based incentives of up to KRW 33 million, depending on the number of downloads.
Meanwhile, the first Open API Support Group recruited in November 2011 implemented 36 development projects whose services were released consecutively on T Store. K-pop Quiz, one of the services developed using MelOn and text messaging API, became an instant hit, exceeding 90,000 cumulative downloads in just two months after launch.
“Smaller development firms and individual developers are showing greater interest in using SK Planet’s open APIs to develop services that interact with the company’s core services and technologies,” said Kim Young-chul, SK Planet’s Head of Open Collaboration Promote Center. “Open Innovation Center will continue to lead the efforts to expand our API offerings and drive shared growth.”
