Seoul, Korea, July 25, 2013—SK Planet today announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KDDI, Japan’s second largest mobile operator to further strengthen a strategic partnership to offer cross-border NFC services.
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a set of short-range wireless technologies that enable data transfers between two smart devices within the range of ten centimeters. Present applications include mobile payment, coupon, membership, ad and security.
The MOU titled “Partnership for NFC Open Platform” was signed by Kah Jong-hyun, Senior Vice President of SK Planet’s Core Platform Management Division and Yasuhide Yamamoto, Vice President of KDDI’s Product Sector on July 24 at the headquarters of KDDI in Tokyo, Japan.
The agreement will enhance communication between SK Planet and KDDI on diverse NFC-enabled services including membership, coupon and payment built on SK Planet’s ‘NFC Open Platform’ which made world debut last December. Under the partnership, the two companies will optimize ‘NFC Open Platform’ for the Japanese market and conduct pre-commercialization test, with service launch targeted for early next year.
The business alliance will make it easier for NFC service providers in Japan to provide related services by leveraging the open form of platform. Customers in Korea and Japan are expected to enjoy the convenience of NFC membership and payment services that are compatible in both countries.
The two companies have already cooperated on several projects including joint demonstration of NFC-enabled services at the Mobile Asia Expo (MAE) 2012 in Shanghai, as the two have been in talks to facilitate the adoption of NFC in Japan. KDDI is Japan’s second largest mobile service provider with over 50 million subscriber base.
Moreover, SK Planet and KDDI, in collaboration with Softbank, set up a pilot NFC zone in Shin-Okubo, a district in Tokyo known for its shops specializing in Korean products and services. Related service providers have taken a considerable interest in the first NFC-based couponing service launched in Japan as it delivers a whole new kind of convenient mobile commerce experience in over 100 shops. Once commercialization of NFC services takes place early next year, relevant service exchanges between Korea and Japan is expected to accelerate.
“SK Planet and KDDI plan to work closely together to bring to market diverse NFC-based services such as payment, membership and coupon,” said Kah Jong-hyun, Senior Vice President of SK Planet’s Core Platform Management Division. “We plan to launch diverse NFC service solutions in neighboring economies of Japan, China and Southeast Asia by leveraging our extensive technological know-how accumulated through taking a leadership role in the global standardization of NFC.”
Starting with the partnership with KDDI, SK Planet plans to showcase the superiority of SmartTouch, SK Planet’s NFC open platform and pursue partnerships with global mobile carriers. With global mobile operators showing considerable interest in NFC deployment, SK Planet expects further partnership opportunities that utilize its world class NFC technology.
