SK Planet Participates in the Formation of a Patent Pool for Streaming Video with Ten Global Firms 2016-11-20 Hits14896

- Forms a patent pool for MPEG-DASH with leading IT companies including Hitachi and Siemens
- Proves its technological edge with breakthrough technologies for video commerce and OTT

Seoul, Korea, November 20, 2016—SK Planet today announced that it became the first commerce service provider in Korean to
participate in the formation of a patent pool* for MPEG-DASH with ten global IT firms.
*A patent pool refers to a consortium of companies agreeing to offer a joint license of patents for a particular technology

SK Planet registered three patents for video delivery at global patent licensing agency MPEG LA, and has formed patent pool
for a next-generation video streaming technology ‘MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH) with global IT
giants such as Hitachi and Siemens.

MPEG LA, based in U.S., is a patent pool firm that receives the authority to act on behalf of patent holders or licensors, collect
royalties from licensees, and distribute royalty income to licensors.

The joint license includes some 20 patents that are essential to the MPEG-DASH standard, which enables high quality streaming of
media content over HTTP to be dynamically adapted to changing network conditions to provide smooth, high quality playback of video
and other content without stalls or re-buffering events. It is recognized as the key technology for services such as OTT and video commerce.

The formation of MPEG-DASH patent pool will allow SK Planet to ▲ collect license fees from video service providers that rely on
MPEG-DASH technique to deliver media content to devices such as smartphones, smart TVs, and set-top boxes, and
▲ prove its technological edge in video commerce after registering its video conversion/compression patents in May 2016 and
July 2015 at MPEG LA and SISVEL that own patent portfolios which are among the largest in the world.

“SK Planet has participated in the formation of a patent pool, even from the beginning of setting an agreed international standard,
which is rare for a commerce service provider,” said Lee Sang-ho, CTO of SK Planet. “Based on our technological capabilities
on a par with global IT companies, we are committed to delivering unique e-commerce services in markets both at home and abroad.”
